UniMARE is a Marine Biology School located in the South of Italy close to the city of Naples, in the Marine Protected Area of Punta Campanella. It offers a unique experience to German-speaking Schools that book intensive marine biology programs (1 to 5 days) to learn basic principles of marine life and ecosystems through lectures, marine explorations, labs and hands-on activities. The school was founded in 2013 by 2 Austrian marine Biologists, and sine 2024 it is managed by a team of a local marine Biologist, environmental Communicators and outdoor Experts.

UNIMARE is located at a campsite (Villaggio Camping Nettuno) overlooking the beach made of pebbles and rocky cliffs, in the small village of Nerano - Marina del Cantone at the end of the Sorrento Peninsula, between the Gulf of Naples, the island of Capri and the Amalfi coast. The territory, rich in natural resources, transformed from a fisherman village to a very touristic site, especially during the summer season and since 1997 it is part of the MPA of Punta Campanella. The MPA aims to protect marine ecosystems like seagrass meadows, hard substrate communities and underwater caves. 


The JOB

We are looking for 2 marine Biologists able to work in German language to lead marine biology classes on local Mediterranean fauna and flora, including lectures and laboratory activities, hikes, snorkeling and kayak trips. The job duration lasts 5 months, from the 15th of may to the 15th of october.

TASKS

A typical working day consists of 8 hours (about 5hr of activity with students and about 3hr of preparation/logistics):

· Morning Session

  • Preparation of the classroom (projector, laptop, microscopes, education material etc.)
  • Welcoming the group of students
  • Holding a lecture on one of the chosen topics
  • Guiding a first snorkeling trip with the class (about 10 participants per guide)

· Afternoon Session

  • Lecture and laboratory activity on one of the chosen topics
  • Guiding a second snorkeling trip with the class (about 10 participants per guide)

Some program days consists of a field visit to the protected area of Ieranto Bay, where you will be asked to lead the hike for the group of students, and to guide them in a kayak and snorkeling tour.

Candidates will run these activities under the supervision of the UNIMARE lead team, and wit the help of university practitioners.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Excellent command of German and English (C1 or C2 level). Additionally, Italian is an asset;
  • An accomplished Bachelor/Master degree in marine biology, marine science or related fields;
  • A Life guard certification (Silver or Bronze);
  • Commitment to work for the entire duration (15th of May to 15th of October);
  • Flexibility to alternate busy weeks and calmer weeks [for the impact of this alternance on your salary, see below];
  • Motivation to share your knowledge in an interactive and creative way, and to adapt your pedagogical methods to the situation. Previous experience in pedagogical work with youth is an asset;
  • A positive attitude and patience to work with school classes (20-30 adolescents aged 15-19);
  • A particular interest and love for nature, the ocean, marine biology, environmental education and outdoor activities.

WHAT WE OFFER

Travel reimbursement – arrival (mid-may) and return (mid-october) to and from the Sorrento Peninsula;

Accommodation – We provide free accommodation (shared room) in a house located uphill in the village of Nerano, which is about 2km from Marina del Cantone. You will share the house with a team of biologists, interns and volunteers. Around 500 people live in Nerano. There are few shops and bars in the village. Buses connect Nerano to Sorrento several times per day. The area offers plenty of opportunities for snorkeling and hiking.

Training – the team will benefit from a winter on-line training session to learn about UNIMARE, the territory and the courses, methods and  activities that will be deepened during the first phase of the program (from 15th to 31st of may).

Mentoring – the team will take part in weekly meetings with UNIMARE lead team to improve the program and to reflect on the work done.

Salary – a minimum amount of 1500€ per month (net income) is guaranteed (with a monthly commitment of 15 days of work). For each exceeding day of work, we will cover an extra wage of 100€/day. The training phase of may (15 days) will not be considered part of the working days.
